Avignon & Provence

Avignon

Our wedding will take place, 20 minutes outside of Avignon, France, a beautiful historic city in the heart of Provence. Avignon is best known as the seat of the Catholic Church during the 14th century, during which seven successive popes resided in Avignon rather than Rome. The city boasts multiple UNESCO world heritage sites (including its city center) and is one of the only French cities to have preserved medieval ramparts.

Our top attractions in Avignon:

1. The Palace of the Popes (Le Palais des papes) - http://www.palais-des-papes.com/en

2. Pont Saint Bénézet - Take a stroll down this iconic bridge that served point of transport across the Rhône river until the 20th century. - https://avignon-tourisme.com/en/activities/avignon-bridge-pont-saint-benezet/

3. Jardin de Doms - Beautiful public garden located 30m above the Rhone river with beautiful views of the surrounding countryside -  https://avignon-tourisme.com/en/activities/doms-garden/

Day trips in Provence

Pont du Gard

One of the tallest and best preserved ancient Roman aqueducts in the world, this historical site serves as an icon of Western antiquity. Multiple companies also offer guided kayak, canoe and cycling trips to the area (check Trip advisor for company reviews).

L'Ile-sur-la-Sorgue

This quaint village, nicknamed "Venice of the Comat" due to the canals traversing its center, is also a major antiques center with both high-end galleries and a massive flea market with more than 300 stalls.

Châteauneuf-du-pape Wine region

Located just a few kilometers from our wedding venue, this prestigious wine region is known for its reds with warm, ripe tones and high alcohol content. Take a tour of its many cellars and wine estates, or the village that gives the region its name and includes the ruins of the summer home ("New Château") of a fourteenth century pope.

Hiking in the Lubéron:

The Lubéron regional nature park is has an area of over 165,000 hectares and is  designated as a Biosphere Reserve by UNESCO due to its impressive biodiversity. The terrain includes three mountain ranges, diverse agricultural areas, and quaint hilltop villages. With over 1900 miles of designated walking trails, there are plenty of hikes to chose from, however a few recommended hikes are found on the site below:

Cycling

What's even better than hiking through beautiful mountainous terrain? For some of you, it could be scaling the hills by bicycle. Check out some of the scenic cycling routes in the region.
